Never-ending love

‘I still love the people of Israel, even though they turn to other gods.’ Hosea 3.1 (GNB)

This sentence from Hosea has so much to say about the unfailing love of God for us. He was seeking to present God’s message to his people at a time when they were in danger of turning away from him. You can almost hear the sadness in God’s heart as he proclaims his love despite them wandering away from him.

The message to us is that even if we feel we have wandered far away from God, or that we have not given him the attention we should, his constant love for us remains. This reassures us that God’s love is not dependent on our actions but upon his heart. This is such good news! If his love depended on our actions, we would be constantly caught up in activities seeking to earn his love or approval, whereas the truth is that we are loved anyway, and God cannot stop loving us. However, this is not a license for us to go and do whatever we want, believing that it won’t make any difference since he loves us anyway, because love also demands a response to the one we love.

The fact that Jesus loved us is why he gave his life for us, and it is the fact that we want to express our love for him that affects how we conduct our lives – but to begin with, let’s be sure that when we come to God in prayer our first thoughts are of his love for us, no matter who we are or what we have done, and let’s rejoice in that.

A healing touch from Jesus can be life changing – which is wonderful! – but if you, or the people you are praying for, are inclined to make any significant change to your lifestyle, please think it through carefully and check it out with a wise friend, doctor or church leader first.
