New every morning

“Because of the LORD’s great love we are not consumed, for his compassions never fail. They are new every morning; great is your faithfulness.”  Lamentations 3.22-23 These amazing words are a beautiful reminder of God’s ongoing love that we can discover afresh every day. What is even more amazing is when we read these words in the light of the rest of the chapter. Lamentations 3 starts off as a very painful account of the suffering the writer was going through, suggesting there was no hope or light in his life.  He talks about bitterness, hardship and of being trampled on.  Then, in the middle of the chapter, we read today’s words and the tone begins to change.  The suffering is still there, but hope begins to emerge alongside it.  The writer begins to hear encouragement from God and recognises his hand upon his life.

We would love it to be the case that as soon as we turn to God all our suffering ceases, but we know that this is unlikely to be the case. Yet this chapter conveys the importance of turning afresh to the wonder of God’s love every day. This might not solve all our problems, but it will help us to discover a fresh awareness of his presence that is with us already.
