‘If the Lord can see everything in the world of the dead, he can see in our hearts.’ Proverbs 15.11 (Contemporary English Version)
Most of us have probably felt at times that our prayers were hitting a brick wall, or we have found ourselves wondering where God was when we most needed him. It can sometimes feel as if he has been absent or deaf!
However, this verse brings us right back to one of the central pillars of our faith; God sees everything, even the deepest things in our hearts, including our prayers and longings.
If this is true, we can give thanks that, at the very least, God has heard us. We may not receive the answer to our prayers exactly as we might wish, but if we trust in his unfailing love and believe that he hears our every cry, then there must be a reason for the way he acts, even if we have no idea what it is!
This is all part of the faith and trust we are called to exhibit as we grow in our walk with God. We will certainly not be the first people to feel confused why God does not do something in the way we would like – and we won’t be the last! – but we can take comfort in the truth that God sees our lives, hears our prayers and loves us beyond understanding.
What things have you prayed about today? It might be helpful to jot them down and as you think about each in turn, to recognise that every single one of your prayers has been heard by the one who has the power to do more than you can ask or imagine.
