“I have given you authority . . . to overcome all the power of the enemy;” Luke 10.19
Jesus said that he had come in order that we might have abundant life (John 10.10). It sounds wonderful, but the trouble is that his words did not automatically bring about the abundant life he promised. It is all too evident today that there are many Christians who certainly would not claim to have abundant life, no matter how much they seek it, and it is probably true for most of us that there are obstacles in our way.
It is worth taking a moment to reflect on what these obstacles might be. What is it that stops you enjoying the abundant life that Jesus came to bring? As you think about this question, today’s Bible verse about Jesus giving us authority to overcome the power of the enemy, takes on a new meaning.
Jesus made his statement about giving us abundant life so that we could catch his vision of what life could be like; a life in direct contrast to the work of the enemy who came to steal, kill and destroy. In recognition of this, Jesus gives us authority to overcome the works of the enemy – to refuse to accept them as our lot from now on. Instead, we have permission to stand against them by bringing them into the glorious light of Jesus, where we can seek his healing, help and deliverance.
Take a moment to learn these words and reflect upon them as you think about your life: “I have been given authority to overcome the power of the enemy.”
