‘For God did not give us a spirit of timidity, but a spirit of power, of love and of self-discipline.’ 2 Timothy 1.7
What could God do through you today? If it is true that a spirit of power and love is within us, what difference can we make to those people we will meet today? The answer, of course, is we can make a big difference, but other things hold us back.
It is with a spirit of self-discipline that we need to attack the timidity that so often grips us. We may dream dreams of what God could do through us; we may have an awareness of the presence of God within us; and we will probably find ourselves in situations where the thought goes through our minds to say something, or offer to pray for someone – but we draw back, wondering what people will think of us, or suddenly overcome by the thought that we may have got it wrong.
Self-discipline is not just about the discipline to lead a good life; it is not just about saying ‘no’ to temptation, it is also about saying ‘no’ to timidity and fear. So what if we haven’t got it wrong and the Spirit is prompting us and nudging us? What if the power of God could do something wonderful in those situations?
This is a verse worth memorising and carrying into the day ahead, so that whenever feelings of timidity rise up you can bring these words to mind. Then maybe you really can let him work through you.
