Practice makes perfect!

‘About midnight Paul and Silas were praying and singing hymns to God’ Acts 16.25

Surely this is the sort of thing Christians should be doing? At first sight there is nothing unusual about this statement, but the reality is that Paul and Silas were in prison. Added to this, the reason they were imprisoned was because they had been obedient to God. They had gone to a specific area and during their time there had delivered a girl from the influence of the devil. This had landed them in prison, and to some extent they must have wondered why it had all turned out that way; they had been obedient and look where it had landed them!

You may not be able to identify with them in their physical situation, but you can probably understand their likely confusion. The lesson to be learned from Paul and Silas is the importance of turning to God in prayer and praise rather than wallowing in confusion and doubt.

However, this is far easier said than done, and unless your natural inclination is to turn to God when you have moments of crisis, it probably won’t happen. Think about some small event in your life that is a source of confusion or worry, and use this to practise turning your attention away from the problem and onto God. The more you can do it with small issues, the more natural it will be when more major issues come along.

A healing touch from Jesus can be life changing – which is wonderful! – but if you, or the people you are praying for, are inclined to make any significant change to your lifestyle, please think it through carefully and check it out with a wise friend, doctor or church leader first.
