Practising faith

‘David said to the Philistine, “You come against me with sword and spear and javelin, but I come against you in the name of the Lord Almighty, the God of the armies of Israel, whom you have defied.”’ 1 Samuel 17.45

The story of David and Goliath is loved and cherished by everyone; the ultimate story of the ‘little man’ defeating the ‘big man’. It is a wonderful account of faith in action, a story of someone putting into practice what they believe.

We can all say that God is more powerful than our enemies, or greater than the things that stand against us, but when David was confronted by a warrior champion in whose presence the courage of others melted away, he actually believed it. He knew that the name of God – God’s very presence – was more powerful than anything that could stand against him. If he didn’t, he wouldn’t have risked his life by stepping out from the crowd.

So how did David reach this conviction? He said himself that he had practised. When the king questioned him about whether he was really up to the job, David explained that he had already seen God do amazing things so had no doubt that God could do this too.

Our challenge is to practise our faith. One place to start is having faith in God’s love for us. It can be so tempting to believe that we are abandoned or alone when things go wrong, or when our feelings just aren’t there. This is where faith kicks in; the importance of holding on to what the Bible teaches so clearly, that God loves us and will never let us down. Hold on to this truth now and practise coming back to it throughout the day.

A healing touch from Jesus can be life changing – which is wonderful! – but if you, or the people you are praying for, are inclined to make any significant change to your lifestyle, please think it through carefully and check it out with a wise friend, doctor or church leader first.
