‘Praise the LORD. How good it is to sing praises to our God, how pleasant and fitting to praise him!’ Psalm 147.1 The word that I would like to ponder today is the word ‘fitting’. Apart from the context of trying on clothes, it isn’t the sort of word we use very often! The original Hebrew word conveys the idea of something beautiful, entirely natural and appropriate, which points us to a lovely image of what it means to praise. At times, however, it may seem hard to praise God, especially when things do not seem to be going well and we cannot see God’s hand at work in our lives or situations. Yet even in these times, we are still encouraged to ‘Praise the Lord’. So how can we do this naturally when we may not feel like it? One of the joys of being a Christian is that each of us has the person of the Holy Spirit living within us, who is uniquely part of God and therefore knows what God is doing and sees it all. So even when we cannot see God’s hand touching our circumstances, the Holy Spirit within us can. Tuning in to his presence and knowing that he is actively connecting us to Father God can make it much more natural to offer praise, even when we are uncertain about what is happening. So as you focus on the events you have planned for today, try to remember the presence of the Holy Spirit within you, uniquely connecting you with God and working on your behalf – and then praise will become appropriate, beautiful and more natural.
