Putting your faith in God | 2

“Where is your faith?” Luke 8.25

This question can be rephrased to mean, “In what are you putting your faith?”  Real hopelessness is when there is nothing or no one in whom you can put your faith.  Jesus’ constant call is for us to put our trust in him alone.

If you are sick, for example, Jesus’ call is for you to have faith in him.  Of course, this does not imply that you should not visit a doctor, but that you should recognise the hand of God at work through the medical profession.  Far from dishonouring those with medical skills, once their work is viewed as part of God’s gift to the world rather than simply in terms of human standards, they should be held in even greater esteem.

Having faith in God is about turning to him before you seek help from other sources.  It might only take a second or two, but in that moment you can pray along the lines of, ‘Through these people and their skills, come to me Lord Jesus.’  In this way, whether you are going to the doctor, making an official enquiry or facing a tricky situation at work, you will begin to find you are putting your hope in God and not just in other people.

John recently published a talk about seeing our lives from God’s perspective. We can get into the trap of thinking that the world we can touch, taste and see is the ‘real’ world.
