Receiving God’s gift

Do your best to present yourself to God as one approved, a worker who does not need to be ashamed and who correctly handles the word of truth. 2 Timothy 2.15

This is one of the most wonderful truths about Christmas – God approves of us! It was precisely because of his love for us that God gave us Jesus. Let’s take a moment to ponder this for a moment. God gave us the gift of Jesus precisely because he loves us. Jesus was not given so that we could see what perfection looked like and then recognise our own guilt and failings even more than we do already; he was given because of God’s love for us.

Gifts serve a variety of purposes. They can be decorative and meant to be admired, but probably not touched too often; or fun – providing us with amusement and temporary distraction; whilst others serve a real purpose and are given so that our lives might be impacted in some way. This is the nature of God’s gift of Jesus – a gift given in love and designed to bring change to us. Yet because it is a gift there is no compunction to receive it. No-one is forced to accept Jesus – but when the essence of the gift is a relationship with him, who has come to cleanse and revive us, who wouldn’t want it?

A healing touch from Jesus can be life changing – which is wonderful! – but if you, or the people you are praying for, are inclined to make any significant change to your lifestyle, please think it through carefully and check it out with a wise friend, doctor or church leader first.
