‘He guides me in paths of righteousness for his name’s sake.’ Psalm 23.3
There are two aspects to guidance, both of which tell us much about God’s love and tenderness towards us. The first is that he does indeed guide us along certain paths. That guidance can come in several ways. It may be what we call ‘coincidence’ (which some people prefer to call ‘God-incidence’), it may be the gentle nudge that we feel within us or it may be the wise words of a friend. Often we know exactly what God wants for us, we are just not sure we want to do it! However it comes, this is our loving Father nudging us along certain paths that he knows will be good for us.
The second aspect his guiding love reveals is that we are not robots programmed to perform in certain ways and go in set directions. God loves us for our individuality, and we are able to choose whether to follow his guidance or to take another path. Of course, we will always do better to follow his guidance, but if we choose not to, he will still be there seeking to guide us back. He certainly won’t stop loving us if we wander from the path.
Paul encourages us to offer our bodies as a living sacrifice to God (Romans 12.1); in other words, to seek his guidance and follow it willingly. He will love us anyway, but our offerings are sweet and pleasant to him. Our response to him can bring him pleasure.
What guidance are you seeking for your life, or for this day? Be still and listen for his voice.
