“But love your enemies, do good to them, and lend to them without expecting to get anything back. Then your reward will be great, and you will be children of the Most High, because he is kind to the ungrateful and wicked.” Luke 6.35
It is easy to resent God’s command to be kind and loving to others, especially when we feel that some people deserve very different treatment! However, when we show love to others because we know that we are loved by God, something changes and we become living parables of God’s love to us.
Whenever we feel the desire to judge or to speak against someone because they deserve it, could it be a reflection of how we expect God to act towards us – we get what we deserve. Conversely, when we show grace to someone beyond what they deserve, we are reflecting the way God treats us. When we show genuine compassion and love for the person in addition to grace, then we really begin to understand something of God’s feelings and heart for us.
It starts with action. Over the course of this day, there may be opportunities to treat people as they deserve – perhaps using unkind words or passing on gossip. In these moments recall instead how God acts towards you and try to reflect his heart; be to others as God is to you.
