“I am the LORD your God, who brought you up out of Egypt. Open wide your mouth and I will fill it.” Psalm 81.10
You may be rejoicing at the presence of the living God within you and yet be facing some very real and pressing needs. The encouragement from today’s verse is to look back and remember the good things that God has done and apply these memories to both the present and the future.
All too often we remember the things that we hoped and prayed God would do and then apply our disappointment to the days ahead. However, this verse encourages us to look even further back – to the stunning truths of our faith so that we can apply them to our needs today. This psalmist encouraged the people to reflect on the way God had brought deliverance from slavery. For Christians today, much of the wonder of our faith is centred on Jesus. Out of God’s love for us, Jesus came and utterly gave himself for our total transformation and salvation, and through the Holy Spirit he dwells within us. If this is true, what does it say about your needs today?
A real tragedy would be to forget what God has done and fail to apply it to our lives. How tragic if the next few words of the psalm in verse 11 described us – that so much was offered to us “But my people would not listen to me”.
