‘Then Hannah prayed and said: “My heart rejoices in the Lord”’ 1 Samuel 2.1
Hannah had been crying out to the Lord for a child, and when her request was answered, the Bible records a beautiful prayer of praise and thanksgiving to God. She doesn’t simply thank God for answering her specific prayer, but allows her thanksgiving to lead into praise for the whole character of God.
Luke 17.11–19 records the story of the ten lepers who were healed, and the one who came back to give thanks. We may be quite obedient in following the command to cast our burdens onto Jesus (1 Peter 5.7), but how good are we at coming back in thanksgiving?
It is a good discipline to spend some time each day before the Lord, reviewing the past 24 hours. What things have gone well and where have you seen his hand at work? Can you recall specific answers to prayer? Also consider which things have not gone so well and whether there are things for which you are sorry.
It is so easy to cry out to see more of God at work in your life, but by letting the days pass you by without any real reflection or times of thanksgiving is to miss out on seeing the many miracles and loving touches that God performs in your life.
