Seeking help from others

‘Is any one of you sick? He should call the elders of the church to pray over him and anoint him with oil in the name of the Lord.’ James 5.14

Most of us probably prefer to struggle along on our own than to ask for prayer. There may be a number of reasons for this: not wanting to bother others with our concerns; a sense that other people are worse off than us; or a decision to hide our weaknesses and needs so as not to appear vulnerable.

The reason doesn’t really matter, but James has some clear teaching for us. If we are sick – and he doesn’t specify what sort of sickness, it could be physical, emotional, social or spiritual – then we should receive the ministry of others. Part of this is entirely practical – it can be very hard to pray for ourselves when our symptoms are screaming at us. It is also a matter of living in humility and honesty with one another.

Your willingness to receive the ministry of others is what might encourage them to let down their masks and also ask God for help.

A healing touch from Jesus can be life changing – which is wonderful! – but if you, or the people you are praying for, are inclined to make any significant change to your lifestyle, please think it through carefully and check it out with a wise friend, doctor or church leader first.
