Setting the right context for prayer

‘…according to the grace of our God and the Lord Jesus Christ.’ 2 Thessalonians 1.12

The New Living Translation interprets this phrase beautifully: ‘This is all possible because of the grace of our God and Lord Jesus Christ.’ These words remind us that everything comes down to the fact that God has poured himself out for us in the person of Jesus Christ, who gave up his life so that we might have abundant life. Our faith, everything to which we aspire and all that we achieve, is due to this fact.

Whatever issues you are currently praying about, in whatever circumstances, let prayer begin with worship – an acknowledgment of the abundant grace of God. A river of mercy has already been released, a fountain untapped, and coming to this place is where prayer begins.

As you start to pray right now, first acknowledge the truth of the Father’s love for you; a love that is not his response to your actions or goodness, but a love that saw and cherished you before you were born. Then worship Jesus for the wonder of the Cross; that he died for you and longs for you to have abundant life. All the rest of your prayers will then flow out of this context of what has already been given.

Pray with certainty and gratitude that ‘This is all possible because of the grace of our God and Lord Jesus Christ.’

A healing touch from Jesus can be life changing – which is wonderful! – but if you, or the people you are praying for, are inclined to make any significant change to your lifestyle, please think it through carefully and check it out with a wise friend, doctor or church leader first.
