‘I also learned that . . . all the Levites and musicians responsible for the service had gone back to their own fields.’ Nehemiah 13.10
Nehemiah spent a great deal of time and energy bringing his people back to God, introducing practices and patterns of worship to keep them close to God. At some point, he left Jerusalem and returned to the country and king that sent him in the first place. However, reports began to filter through to him that all was not well, so he returned to find that many of the patterns of worship he introduced had been abandoned, and the people seemed to be slipping away from the godly principles he had introduced.
There may be moments in your life when you sensed a real closeness to God. Rather than regularly thinking back to how wonderful those times were, it is more important to build upon them. There are things we discover at those special times that we are meant to sow into our lives, but it is so easy to let the truths slip.
You may remember, for example, a moment when you experienced a real and personal awareness of the love of God for you. However, you are likely to forget it unless you live in the reality of this love and remind yourself of it every day. If you don’t, all you will have is the vague recollection of a certain moment when you sensed the love of God. Regularly celebrate the wonderful truth that God loves you for who you are and rejoice that he doesn’t wish you were anyone else.
It is so important to consciously make an effort to sow into your life the glorious truths that God reveals to you and not let them slip away.
