The beginning of prayer

‘Therefore, brothers and sisters, since we have confidence to enter the Most Holy Place by the blood of Jesus . . . ’ Hebrews 10.19

This verse, which is about the way we approach God, says something very powerful. It tells us that prayer doesn’t begin with us. It begins with the fact that Jesus died for us – something he did without asking us what we thought about it and something that happened before we were born. We now live after that event and nothing can change the truth that it happened.

The effect of that action was to open the door for us to enter the presence of God. Before all of us stands an open door through which we have every right to enter, a door through which we are beckoned and welcomed. This door leads to a place of amazing power. Beyond it is the ‘Most Holy Place’, the throne room of God and the place of his presence. All that is needed is for us to have the confidence to go into this room and know that we are accepted there.

This is what makes such a difference to our prayers. It is not us speaking words into the air, but actually voicing our needs and concerns in the very throne room of God. When we grasp this, our prayers can change. This is where you are right now, so speak to him.

A healing touch from Jesus can be life changing – which is wonderful! – but if you, or the people you are praying for, are inclined to make any significant change to your lifestyle, please think it through carefully and check it out with a wise friend, doctor or church leader first.
