The danger of drifting

‘We must pay the most careful attention, therefore, to what we have heard, so that we do not drift away.’ Hebrews 2.1

No matter what your experience of God or the current state of your life, we all have one danger in common – drifting away from God.

I suspect that all of us can look back on times when God seemed to be particularly close, or conversely when he felt more distant. On some occasions we can hazard a guess why this might have been the case, but at other times there seems to be no explanation for it. Times of apparent ‘dryness’ might sometimes be important if God is using them to reveal more about himself and new ways of discovering him in prayer, but it’s always worth asking the question – have I drifted away from God?

The writer to the Hebrews calls us to be attentive lest we drift away. If you feel this applies to you, don’t be tempted to lay down guidelines about exactly how long you should spend in prayer or reading the Bible, but just give some honest thought to whether you are as attentive to your spiritual life as you have been in the past.

The amazing assurance in this is that God never slackens in his attentiveness to you. He is always with you, and perhaps when you have drifted away from him, he is searching for you even more because he misses you. Your attentiveness is not just for your benefit but also for his.

A healing touch from Jesus can be life changing – which is wonderful! – but if you, or the people you are praying for, are inclined to make any significant change to your lifestyle, please think it through carefully and check it out with a wise friend, doctor or church leader first.
