‘But the fruit of the Spirit is … faithfulness’ Galatians 5.22
The quality of faithfulness carries with it a sense of reliability; it speaks of constancy and consistency in spite of the circumstances. In order to develop faithfulness in others, the Holy Spirit must be faithful himself in spite of whatever else is going on – namely, us! – around him.
We may not be faithful or consistent in the outworking of our faith, but the Holy Spirit is faithful within us, always present, loving and tender despite what we may perceive as our many failings and ways we feel we let God down. The faithfulness of the Spirit is his commitment to our transformation, which he must so desperately long for, but for which he is willing to wait and tenderly bring about at the right time.
When we trust in the faithfulness of God and his Spirit within us, repentance becomes something we can do with boldness and confidence. He will not leave us or clobber us, but waits with love for us to turn to him and find the peace he is longing to give us.
