‘…whoever acknowledges the Son has the Father also.’ 1 John 2.23
This verse really opens our eyes to what is available for us. It doesn’t just inform us about possibilities but about realities. In his letter, John says that there is such a unity between Jesus and his Father that if we open our hearts to Jesus, we have actually opened the door to the wonder of Father God as well.
At prayer meetings, it is interesting to listen to whom most people pray! The majority of prayers seem to be addressed to ‘Lord’ – but when Jesus spoke about prayer, he encouraged us to talk to ‘Father’. He knew that entering into this child/father relationship was so rich and beautiful that he didn’t want anyone to miss out on it.
For some people, however, fatherhood has negative connotations and because of this they may well not have consciously developed a relationship with Father God, possibly because they do not know how. If this is true for you, then be reassured by these words from John which encourage you not to worry or feel guilty, but simply to be aware that the Father is there anyway, loving and waiting.
Since the Father is always there for you, it’s never too late to start getting to know him and building a relationship to be explored and enjoyed for ever more.
