The first time – again!

‘“No one ever spoke the way this man does,“ the guards declared.’ John 7.46

Interestingly, these words were spoken by the guards who had just been sent to arrest Jesus, but they were so struck by what he said that they came back without doing what they were supposed to do!

How do you react to the words of Jesus? There is a saying that ‘familiarity breeds contempt’, and while we may not hold Jesus’ words in contempt, certainly our familiarity with them can lessen their impact upon us. Similarly, the accounts of Jesus’ life can lose their impact because we know what will happen next.

When you read a passage from the New Testament, try to rediscover a sense of freshness and amazement at Jesus’ words by asking yourself, “What would I think if I was reading these words for the first time?” Jesus’ words are timeless – it is our reaction to them that can become stale.

If you want to read a little more on this, John has written a blog on how we can take Jesus’ words seriously.

A healing touch from Jesus can be life changing – which is wonderful! – but if you, or the people you are praying for, are inclined to make any significant change to your lifestyle, please think it through carefully and check it out with a wise friend, doctor or church leader first.
