The fruit of the Spirit | 1

‘But the fruit of the Spirit…’ Galatians 5.22

Belief in God is not extraordinary: many people claim belief in some sort of higher being. However, belief becomes more personal when the nature of this higher being is considered. In other words, what is God like?

Over the next ten days we are going to look at the nature of God from what might seem a surprising passage: the verses in Galatians where Paul describes the fruits of the Spirit. These fruits are more commonly thought of as characteristics of what Christians should be like; a description of what the Spirit produces within us. This list of characteristics, however, is more than this. It is also a description of the Spirit himself.

Any fruit must bear a resemblance to the tree from which it comes; an apple tree cannot produce bananas! So in looking at the fruits produced by the Spirit, they must by their very nature be saying something about the nature of the Holy Spirit himself. As we look at the fruits in this light, we discover something beautiful about the nature of the Spirit of God. Rather than being someone who is out to condemn and convict, he is a person of joy and peace living within us.

God’s Spirit of joy and peace is with you now; welcome him and begin to relax in his presence.

A healing touch from Jesus can be life changing – which is wonderful! – but if you, or the people you are praying for, are inclined to make any significant change to your lifestyle, please think it through carefully and check it out with a wise friend, doctor or church leader first.
