The generosity of God

“I gave your master’s house to you, and your master’s wives into your arms. I gave you all Israel and Judah. And if all this had been too little, I would have given you even more.” 2 Samuel 12.8

In this passage God recounts how generous he has been to David. It seems such a ‘nice’ passage, but actually it forms part of God’s rebuke to David after his affair with Bathsheba. In essence God was saying, “Why did you go after what you did not have when I was willing to give you everything?”

Perhaps God is revealing that a lack of belief in his extravagant generosity is at the heart of the desires that lead to sin. Rather than go after what we do not have, the answer is to recognise our desires and bring them to God in the faith that he will not ridicule us, but will meet our desires in different ways or show us how he has met them already.

It is not God’s desire for us to be miserable, nor that we fulfil our desires in ways that might be hurtful to others. Far better that we bring everything about ourselves to him so that he can touch everything within us. What do you want to bring to him today?

A healing touch from Jesus can be life changing – which is wonderful! – but if you, or the people you are praying for, are inclined to make any significant change to your lifestyle, please think it through carefully and check it out with a wise friend, doctor or church leader first.
