‘She gave this name to the LORD who spoke to her: ‘You are the God who sees me.’’ Genesis 16.13
If God really is everywhere all the time, of course he sees everything, but what do we think God really sees? It is our answer to that question that probably reveals something about the nature of our relationship with God.
Many people are convinced that what God sees most of all is our sin. We assume this is what God looks at, because it is often what we are most aware of. The story of Hagar in this chapter of Genesis is illuminating. Hagar’s attitude to Sarah was probably the cause of her plight: Sarah realised that Hagar despised her and began to mistreat her. Hagar fled to the desert, where God saw her and spoke to her. As a result, Hagar’s name for God was, ‘You are the God who sees me.’
It is interesting that when God speaks to Hagar, it isn’t about her attitude, which had probably caused the situation in the first place. What he speaks about is what he sees of her potential and her future.
Our God is a God who sees, but don’t assume that all he is interested in are your woes and failings. He sees your dreams for your life, and his dreams for your life. He sees who you are and what has happened to you and, most importantly, he loves what he sees.
Spend time with him right now, resting in his presence, no matter how near or far you feel from him – he is there, looking at you and loving you.
