The joy of the Spirit | 3

‘But the fruit of the Spirit is … joy’ Galatians 5.22

We have more than a happy glow when the presence of the joyful Spirit is within us. Nehemiah 8.10 tells us that ‘the joy of the Lord is your strength’. We can experience this joy, which is such an integral part of the Spirit’s character, precisely because he lives within us.

Presumably the joy which the Spirit bears stems from his intimate relationship with the Father and Jesus. This relationship has given him an understanding of how the Father’s presence permeates everything because he is the Lord of all creation, and also the far reaching effects of Jesus’ cross and resurrection in every part of our lives. He can see everything.

The presence of the Holy Spirit within us is our ultimate cause for hope, because he knows that everything will be fine in the end. He brings the love of the Father and the work of Jesus to us, and his joy comes from knowing the wonder of God far more than we ever could. This is why his joy is our strength.

Seek to catch something of the Holy Spirit’s joy over you now, as he sees far more of God’s activity in your life than you ever could.

A healing touch from Jesus can be life changing – which is wonderful! – but if you, or the people you are praying for, are inclined to make any significant change to your lifestyle, please think it through carefully and check it out with a wise friend, doctor or church leader first.
