‘The LORD is my Banner’ Exodus 17.15
Exodus 17 tells the wonderful story of when Moses defeated the Amalekites, a victory that was won both by Joshua’s skills on the battlefield and by Moses raising his hands to heaven as he stood on the mountain above.
In verse 9, we read that it was not just his hands that Moses raised, but the staff he held in them. It was the same staff that had turned into a snake as a sign of God’s presence with him, and the same staff with which he had struck the Nile and turned it to blood. When he struck the ground with his staff, the dust became gnats, and as he raised his staff over the sea the waters parted.
It is not that the staff was anything magical, but rather that it had come to represent the power of God. When Moses felt it in his hands, it must have encouraged him to believe God could do anything. When he named the place where he built an altar, ‘The Lord is my Banner’, he was calling everyone to remember that God is faithful, and that by holding on to him we will have the victory.
You may not have a staff, but you do have the cross. This is what you can lift up in your times of difficulty: let it represent the love of God that sent Jesus to you, the power of God over sin and the weapon God used to overcome the works of the devil.
As you sit in God’s presence, hold a cross if you have one. Let it be a reminder that there is no limit to his love for you, no work of the devil that can stand against him and nothing that cannot be rectified by his power.
