‘The LORD Will Provide’ Genesis 22.14
When Abraham named the place where he almost sacrificed his son ‘The Lord Will Provide’, he set down a marker for something he had discovered to be true, and he wanted everyone to know the truth as strongly as he did. The circumstances of the story of Abraham’s willingness to sacrifice Isaac are well known and in many ways it seems a barbaric story, but this lesson about God’s provision is one that Abraham would never forget, and the place, “The Lord Will Provide”, is a place for us to take to heart as well.
The truth that God is our provider echoes through the Bible. It is one of the names of God that people through the ages have found be true, and is a truth to which Jesus often returned, assuring his followers that if God provides for the birds of the air, surely he will care for them since they are of more value than the birds.
We all have different needs, whether physical, spiritual, emotional or social, and it is encouraging that one of the first names God reveals about himself in the Bible is that of provider. There is nothing wrong in having needs, but the way in which we give voice to them is important. We shouldn’t express our needs out of helplessness or despair, but rather bring them to God, who has declared that he wants to be known as the one who provides.
We bear his name, ‘Provider’, and every time a need arises within us, we can carry his name to this need. Say “The Lord Will Provide” to yourself for a few minutes and come back to it again throughout the day.
