‘The LORD is Peace’ Judges 6.24
When Gideon meets an angel of the Lord (it may even be the Lord himself), his understanding is that to be in such close proximity to God is to die. Yet after this meeting, God speaks the word ‘peace’ to Gideon and assures him that he is not going to die. In relief and thanksgiving, Gideon names the place where this encounter took place, ‘The Lord is Peace’.
The wonderful truth revealed in this passage is that God’s desire is to speak peace to us. Of all the things we imagine God might want to say to us, peace is probably not the first. We often imagine him wanting to have a word with us about our sins and failings – perhaps because we are so aware of them that our assumption is that God must be as well.
What is so revealing about this name of God is that it shows us that God does not simply give peace, he is peace. Peace is at the very core of his being.
As a bearer of his name, you can expect to experience the wonder of God’s peace in your life, not as a result of anything you have achieved but as a consequence of who he is. As you sit quietly now, find the peace that God brings and take it with you into the hours ahead.
