‘This is how God showed his love among us: He sent his one and only Son into the world that we might live through him.’ 1 John 4.9
How do I know that God loves me? This is a challenging question for many people. We are told of God’s love, we read of it and we sing of it in hymns and choruses, but how do we know that it is true and real for us? If we are honest, there are many times when we do not feel that love and God can seem very distant.
What the Bible comes back to again and again is that the love of God is not primarily about feelings (although it’s true that on some occasions we may feel his love), but rather his love is proved by what he has already done by sending Jesus to us.
Why would God send Jesus to this world if not to show his love? It can hardly be to judge us, since if God wanted to do this, he could have done so anyway without needing to come to earth. Instead Jesus showed an amazing compassion for those who were in need, and by coming from the Father and sacrificing his own life he opened up the way back to God. That is how we know that God loves us.
The next time you pass an image of a cross, whether it’s around someone’s neck or on top of a building, try to do more than simply note it. Reflect on it and let it be a reminder of God’s profound love for you.
