“The LORD reigns!” 1 Chronicles 16.31
God does indeed reign – he is an active and powerful king, with a mission to change the injustice under which so many live. Yet rather than sovereignly intervening in the world, he so often seems to operate through us, his people. It is us who are so often the doorways through which his mission flows.
It may be that we are the answer to the injustice that grips many, the hands of God to bring healing to others, a voice to the downtrodden or action for those who cannot act for themselves.
This might sound rather daunting, but in Hebrews 4.16, we are encouraged to approach God’s ‘throne of grace’ in order to find the help that we need. In other words, God’s throne is not distant and unapproachable, but is something to which we can come and from which transforming power flows.
Whatever the solution to an injustice, it begins with us coming to God’s throne of grace, compassion and power so that all that is needed may flow from there.
God is an active king. He is not powerless; rather he is a God who acts and responds to the cries of his people.
