The right to be a child of God

‘Yet to all who received him, to those who believed in his name, he gave the right to become children of God’ John 1.12

This beautiful verse empha­sises that no matter who we are or what our background is, every single one of us has the privilege to come to God as Abba, Father.

Of course, we could all be more open and committed – there is always more we can do – but once we have made that step towards Jesus and opened our hearts to him, so much more is given to us: the right to see ourselves as children of God and call ourselves as such.

As if that wasn’t enough, our right to call God ‘Father’ is wonderfully linked to our relationship with Jesus, in that we are invited to have the same relationship with our Father that Jesus had. When Jesus was praying (John 17.26), he spoke to his Father about the love they both shared also being in us. Jesus’ prayer, or desire, was that the love he and the Father enjoyed might be the love that we enjoy.

This is your privilege, your calling and your right. You can step into this relationship right now; it is meant for you. There is nothing more God can do to bring it about. He is waiting for you to enjoy it. Begin to accept the truth of these words, ‘You are my Father, and I belong to you.’
