The same Jesus, then and now

‘Jesus Christ is the same yesterday and today and forever.’ Hebrews 13.8

This sentence is so simple, so comforting and also so challenging. The Jesus you worship and whose presence you seek is the same Jesus you read about in the Gospels. He has the same heart, the same passions and the same love for you.

This is what is so comforting. In your times of need, when perhaps you can identify with some of the sinners, the unclean and the sick whom Jesus touched, he has not changed. His heart is moved by your situation just as it was moved back then. It bothers Jesus when you are in pain or are being badly treated. That is why he came to this world – to show you how much it bothered him. He is the same today as he was then; it still bothers him.

The challenge is this: do you actually believe it? If Jesus in physical form was to walk round by your side today, what difference would it make to what you do? If prayer was about actually sitting with the physical Jesus, what would come out of your lips?

As you turn to Jesus now, begin by letting these words take root in you: ‘Jesus, you are the same yesterday, today and tomorrow.’ Let the truth of that make a difference to you today.

A healing touch from Jesus can be life changing – which is wonderful! – but if you, or the people you are praying for, are inclined to make any significant change to your lifestyle, please think it through carefully and check it out with a wise friend, doctor or church leader first.
