‘. . . your rod and your staff, they comfort me.’ Psalm 23.4
The presence of Jesus with us is not simply a nice feeling that can bring reassurance. This is the presence of the one who stilled a storm. When we find the presence of Jesus with us, or when we have that sense of his assurance, it is worth asking what we expect him to do now that he is here? Sometimes we may have a strange notion that he will stand by and watch bad things happen to us because he knows it will ultimately be good for us, which is not true.
As David walked through that valley of the shadow of death, he knew that the shepherd was with him and was actively looking after him, using his rod and staff on his behalf. In fact, simply being aware that the shepherd had a staff was of comfort to David in his perilous walk.
The Jesus who walks with us in our fears is the same Jesus who is seated at the right hand of God and is Lord over all. The weapon we have is that of worship. As we acknowledge Jesus for who he is, for his presence with us, for his Lordship over everything, the reality of his powerful presence becomes even more real. He walks with us; his active love for us is a reality. Let’s expect to see him work on our behalf.
