“I have made you known to them and will continue to make you known …” John 17.26
As you read through the Gospels and look at the ministry of Jesus, ask yourself what it was he was seeking to do. Was it to bring salvation to as many as he could? Was it to bring freedom to those who were held captive? Of course, both these reasons are true, but he did more. In this verse, Jesus reveals something wonderful about what was really driving him in his ministry. He came to reveal the nature of the Father.
The whole of John 17 is a prayer – the final prayer between Jesus and his Father before the events of the Passion. In this final verse of the chapter, Jesus speaks to his Father and says that he has indeed made him known and will continue to do so. In other words, as the events of the Passion unfolded, and as Jesus exercises his ministry among us today, he is still on that mission to make the Father known.
If ever you think you can pray to Jesus rather than the Father because Jesus seems somehow more approachable, you are missing something very important. Everything Jesus did or said showed something beautiful about the Father; you can come to the Father with the same joy and wonder with which you come to Jesus.
