The words we use

‘The mouth of the righteous is a fountain of life’ Proverbs 10.11

When we talk to people, especially if they are in particular need, we want to say the right thing and avoid putting our foot in it and making things worse! Sometimes it can be quite a struggle to think of the right words to say. However, this verse says we don’t have to try too hard.

You are one of the righteous, and therefore your mouth is a fountain of life to those you meet. This has nothing to do with your own ability, but is all down to the simple fact that you have the Spirit of God living within you. You need to remember to tune into the one who is living within you, rather than try too hard to say the right thing. It is not about what you can say to people, but what would Jesus say to them?

When you are next in conversation with someone, keep the word ‘Jesus’ in your mind as a question. What you are really asking is, “Jesus, what would you say to this person?” This is different from trying to come up with some wise words to share, because instead you are looking to the source of living water flowing out of you. If something comes to mind, gently share it. You don’t have to say this is what Jesus says, as there is always the possibility you may be wrong, but the words you speak might be exactly what that person needs to hear. You are a fountain of life – so at least give the living water a chance to flow!

A healing touch from Jesus can be life changing – which is wonderful! – but if you, or the people you are praying for, are inclined to make any significant change to your lifestyle, please think it through carefully and check it out with a wise friend, doctor or church leader first.
