“This is how you are to bless the Israelites. Say to them: “The LORD bless you and keep you; the LORD make his face shine upon you and be gracious to you; the LORD turn his face towards you and give you peace.” Numbers 6.23-26
When God gave this blessing to Moses to pass on, he wasn’t fussy about who Moses blessed with it! In fact, God was revealing his heart for all his people.
We can be so quick to assume that God’s wonderful promises are for everyone else except us, but this is simply untrue. When God spoke this blessing, he was not thinking of a few particular Israelites but of them all. He didn’t add a clause excluding those who didn’t deserve to be blessed – it was for everyone without exception.
It is so easy to think, ‘If only God knew what I was really like, surely he wouldn’t want such good things for me?’ Yet by giving up his life for us, Jesus took away everything that could possibly separate us from him. Everything we can think of that might exclude us was taken away because of what Jesus did, so this blessing is for every one of us.
As you read through these words of blessing again, catch the truth that they are for you and you are not excluded. Every time the blessing speaks of, ‘the Lord’, add the words, ‘wants to…’ so that it reads: ‘The Lord wants to bless you and keep you; the Lord wants to make his face shine upon you and be gracious to you; the Lord wants to turn his face towards you and give you peace.’
