‘He provides food for the cattle and for the young ravens when they call.’ Psalm 147.9
Surely this psalm isn’t saying that we are meant to simply sit and wait for God to provide us with food? What it does say is that if God’s care extends to animals and what may seem the most insignificant part of creation, how much more does he care for us? It is not so much a call to sit still and wait for God to put the food into our mouths, but rather a call to trust in the extent of his care for us and that care includes providing for us.
You may be facing difficulties in your life. If so, ask yourself what is the level of your trust in God? What is it you actually trust God to do for you today? If you are honest, most of the time you probably expect to get through the day largely by your own efforts and skills. You would like God to continue keeping you alive by his sustaining power, but you would also like to think that you can get through the day without being too dependent on him.
Start to grow your trust in him by choosing one thing you need today that only God can give. It may be an inner attitude. There are plenty of things within you that only God can do, such as a changed attitude to someone or more patience to face a frustrating situation. Whatever it might be, find strength in some words from Psalm 13.5, ‘I trust in your unfailing love’, and bring your specific need into a place of trust.
