Trusting in God’s mercy

‘But because of his great love for us, God, who is rich in mercy . . . ’ Ephesians 2.4
These words provide us with such a beautiful description of God – who overflows with an abundance of mercy. Presumably then, since he is rich in mercy, he must delight in being merciful; it is part of his very nature.
This can give us a real confidence to stand before God just as we are. If we have something troubling us and know that we need his help, it can be tempting to try to hide it away because we fear what he might do or say to us. This is where our faith comes in – not the faith to believe in God’s existence (we probably have that already), but rather faith in his character. What sort of God do we believe him to be? Do we trust enough in his mercy to bring him all that is within us?
A good question to ask yourself when you are troubled is whether your picture of God has changed because of what you are going through. Of course, he doesn’t change, so have the courage and faith to stand before him and bring every part of yourself to him, trusting that he is indeed rich in mercy.
