“…for any man or woman who approaches the king in the inner court without being summoned the king has but one law: that they be put to death” Esther 4.11
Yesterday we noted how the book of Esther highlights a contrast in attitudes between King Xerxes and God. Today we come across another contrast, this time concerning our access to God.
Xerxes is portrayed as an unapproachable king; if he wanted to see you, you would be summoned! The contrast with God could not be greater – we have unfettered, unrestricted access to him whenever we want it.
Sometimes you might be tempted to wish that God would summon you into his presence. It may be that you feel distant from him and at times like this it can feel as though you have been overlooked. You may well love to hear God speak a word and reveal himself to you more clearly. However, the problem with this is that you are waiting for the wrong person to move. Whether you feel it or not, God is with you and all you have to do is take a step into his presence.
A starting point is to simply say his name, ‘Jesus’. This isn’t a matter of just saying a name – it is recognising that that he is with you and you are talking directly to him. You don’t have to feel his presence or imagine him with you when you speak his name, because the reality is that you are actually talking to him face to face. You are in God’s presence and can share whatever is on your heart.
