‘I lift up my eyes to the mountains – where does my help come from?  My help comes from the LORD, the Maker of heaven and earth.’ Psalm 121.1-2

What do you see as you look around you? So many people see insurmountable problems that feel too huge for them to hold out much hope of overcoming them. These verses encourage us to look beyond the immediate problems to the wonder of God beyond.

There is an encouraging story in 2 Kings 6 in which Elisha’s servant is worried about the enemy camped in the hills above them. Despite this, Elisha seems totally unconcerned about the situation and goes on to pray that God would open his servant’s eyes, which he did (verse 17). Now the servant can see what Elisha saw all along – the army of God encamped just behind the enemy. No wonder Elisha was unconcerned!

In a similar way, this psalm encourages us to take our eyes off the immediate problems that surround us, and to look to the wonder of God beyond them. We all know this but how do we do it?

In the New Testament, we read of Martha struggling to reconcile the death of her brother with her disappointment that Jesus had arrived too late to prevent it. Despite her grief and confusion she says these words, “I believe that you are the Messiah, the Son of God, who is to come into the world.” (John 11.27) When problems or difficulties arise, make a conscious decision to take your vision off the issues confronting you, and fix it on the one who is always there for you with all the armies of heaven at his disposal.
