Vision

‘Then the Lord opened the servant’s eyes, and he looked and saw the hills full of horses and chariots of fire all round Elisha.’ 2 Kings 6.17

Elisha’s servant had a moment of panic: they were in a fix! He and his master woke up one morning to discover that the town was surrounded by their enemies and, annoyingly for the servant, his master did not seem to be in the least bit worried about the situation. Elisha had an assurance that everything was going to be fine. When the servant persisted in his panic, Elisha prayed for him and things changed. The servant could suddenly see what Elisha had known all along: that as well as being surrounded by the enemy, there were also angelic beings ready to do battle for them.

It is unclear whether Elisha could see these angelic beings or whether he simply knew that God would not desert him, but this passage reassures us that help we cannot see with our physical eyes is available to us. God has promised that his presence is always with us and that his power (which is like the power that raised Jesus from the dead – Romans 8.11) is dwelling within us. We may not see it but we are assured it’s there.

Within its pages we gain new confidence for the situations in which we find ourselves. If you are facing something that is causing you confusion or anxiety, stand back from it for a moment and see it from the perspective of Jesus who is with you.
