‘Do not say, “I’ll pay you back for this wrong!” Wait for the Lord, and he will deliver you.’ Proverbs 20.22
In a way, this verse is all about voices and our choice over which voice to listen to. When something unsettling happens – perhaps someone misjudges us or says something against us – all too often the temptation is for us to lash out. Even if we don’t do it verbally, we probably do it inwardly!
This verse from Proverbs assures us that there is another voice, an inner voice, that calls us to restrain ourselves – not simply in refusing to react but by refocusing our attention on our relationship with God. It is not a call to ignore all manner of things that have come against us, but rather a call to put our trust in the one who will come to our aid.
Unfortunately, the aid or deliverance God brings does not usually smite down our enemies! Rather, it works upon our hearts. More often than not we would rather God vindicated us and, in some way, punished those who wronged us, but his dream for us is better than that. His dream is that we become like Jesus and reflect him, so that when people look at us they see him.
There will no doubt be times today or in the future when the temptation is to lash out against someone. Come back to this simple word, ‘wait’, and let God touch you before you touch others.
