‘May the Lord direct your hearts into God’s love…’ 2 Thessalonians 3.5
Prayer happens for many different reasons, sometimes out of desperation, often out of habit or duty, and at times out of love. These words, spoken by Paul, point us to another reason why we may be drawn to prayer – by the direction of God himself.
Paul’s prayer is that our hearts are directed into God’s love. Why would God want us to do this? The fact that God has to direct us suggests we probably would not go there naturally. Our hearts may have a tendency to focus on a sense of God’s disapproval or disappointment with us, or an awareness of his demands upon us, when he is actually seeking to lead us elsewhere.
We often use the phrase, ‘being open to the Spirit’, and this implies a willingness to be open to wherever the Holy Spirit wants to take us. Today’s verse reveals that one of the key places the Lord wants to take us is deeper into the Father’s love. If we begin to walk down that path, then we can be sure we are co-operating and walking with him. Why not say to God now, ‘Lord, lead me into your love for me’?
