What are you looking at?

‘Therefore, holy brothers and sisters, who share in the heavenly calling, fix your thoughts on Jesus, whom we acknowledge as our apostle and high priest.’ Hebrews 3.1

The simple question raised by this verse is this: ‘What are you looking at?’ There are many things you could gaze at over the course of an average day.

Perhaps someone has hurt you, intentionally or not, and it is so easy to go over and over it in your mind, replaying the hurt and the things you would like to have said or done at the time. Or it may be that there is something in your life that you regret, perhaps something you did wrong, and you cannot shake off the memory of your actions. ‘If only… ‘ may be a phrase that comes to mind.

This verse calls us to fix our eyes on Jesus; to look at what naturally flows from him. If you are looking at him rather than at other things, it is more likely that you will receive what he wants to give you – his strength and grace to forgive those who hurt you, the assurance of being forgiven, or something else entirely.

You might find it helpful to ‘hold’ whatever issue you are facing in the palm of your hand. Acknowledge it because it’s real for you, then ‘see’ Jesus’ hand supporting yours. In this way let him carry your burdens. Leave them with him and find his strength.

A healing touch from Jesus can be life changing – which is wonderful! – but if you, or the people you are praying for, are inclined to make any significant change to your lifestyle, please think it through carefully and check it out with a wise friend, doctor or church leader first.
