‘We take captive every thought to make it obedient to Christ’ – 2 Corinthians 10.5
There is something powerful about this verse and we will be looking at it over the next few days. Perhaps the place to start is the phrase ‘every thought’.
There are usually plenty of thoughts going through our minds – probably some lofty and inspirational, alongside others we desperately hope no-one ever knows about! The idea of taking every thought captive suggests that every single one needs to be acknowledged and dealt with. However, I am not convinced that Paul (the author) expected us to literally sit down and go through that process with whatever happens to come to mind. Afterall, we probably have other things that need to be done, like work and family life!
Instead, a good place to begin is to acknowledge that we may be ashamed of some of our thoughts if others knew about them, or that certain feelings about ourselves affect how we react to things. Taking these thoughts captive begins when we acknowledge that they exist. We cannot simply brush them under the carpet or deny their existence, so it is what we do about them that really counts.
As you come before God now, be honest with him about some of things you may try to keep hidden away, as the truth is that he knows about them already and certainly has no plans to reject you.
