‘…he went on to tell them a parable, because he was near Jerusalem and the people thought that the kingdom of God was going to appear at once.’ Luke 19.11
There are many occasions when things do not happen in the timescale we would like. Perhaps you are praying for specific things but the answer seems very slow in coming, or maybe you feel stuck in a difficult situation and are praying for release, but nothing seems to be happening. In these situations, what are you meant to do?
In today’s verse, we are told that some people’s expectations about Jesus were not being met. They thought something was going to happen but Jesus knew it was not, at least not in the way that they were expecting. So, he told them the parable about the man who gave money to his servants and expected them to put it to good use whilst he was away. This also applies to us! As we find ourselves waiting, we should identify the gifts God has given us and use them well.
We can be far too modest about our gifts. They are given by God for us to use so it is certainly worth us spending a few minutes pondering what they might be. They may include things that we do not regard as gifts and tend to think of as character traits, such as a desire to encourage people and be there for them. In this parable, Jesus expects those to whom he has given his gifts to use them. The recipients do not keep coming back to him each day to ask whether it is alright to use their gift again! Jesus expects his gifts to be put to good use.
What gifts has God has given you? Use them because that is why he gave them to you.
