What controls you?

‘We take captive every thought to make it obedient to Christ’ – 2 Corinthians 10.5

Whenever we come across a bold statement like this in the Bible, it must mean that it is possible to do it. If this verse tells us to take our thoughts captive to Christ, for example, then it must be possible – or else it’s very unfair!

So often, we have the impression that it is our thoughts that control us and are responsible for so much of who we are and what we do. However, in this verse Paul is saying that this could not be further from the truth. It is us who have control over our thoughts.

Over the next couple of days we will look at practical ways we can put this into practice, but just knowing that we do not have to be mastered by our thoughts begins to open a door. The next time you feel weighed down by something that occurs to you, recognise it for what it is – simply a thought that can be replaced, and certainly not a reality that has control over you.

A healing touch from Jesus can be life changing – which is wonderful! – but if you, or the people you are praying for, are inclined to make any significant change to your lifestyle, please think it through carefully and check it out with a wise friend, doctor or church leader first.
