“. . . he will rejoice over you with singing.” Zephaniah 3.17
This verse can help to take our understanding of God’s love to a whole new level. It isn’t simply a matter of knowing in our minds that we are loved but is about accepting that God rejoices over us with singing! We might rejoice over a sports team that has won a match by singing and chanting, but God’s rejoicing over us is not quite the same since he is not rejoicing because of anything we have done.
Sometimes we see images of political or wrongly convicted prisoners being released to the sound of much joy and rejoicing. There is a real element of truth displayed in this image, as God does indeed rejoice over the freedom Jesus won for us.
However, there is another equally powerful image – a parent holding a baby and rejoicing over the child, even before they have done anything good or made any contribution to the family other than simply being there. This is the rejoicing God does over us. Out of his love, he adopted you as his child so that he can pour out even more love upon you. This is his love and the reason why he rejoices over you with singing.
Recognise this glorious truth that God treasures you like a baby in his arms and he rejoices over you.
