When things don’t go well

‘…make your face shine on us, that we may be saved.’ Psalm 80.3

Life does not always go well, and things happen that confuse and hurt us. How are we meant to pray in such circumstances? One aspect of intercession that is often lost is reminding God of his word and pleading his promises before him.

In this psalm, things are evidently not going well and three times in these nineteen verses , the writer (Asaph) uses the same phrase: ‘…make your face shine on us, that we may be saved.’ This has its root in the blessing that God himself commanded the Israelites to use in Numbers 6.25. Asaph clearly felt that this was not happening, so kept reminding God of his word and his promise.

Sometimes you may feel that things are not happening as God wants them to happen. Of course, you need to find out what God may be saying to you in those circumstances, but it is also good to plead God’s word before him and begin to take a stand on the promises he has given. He may well take you to new places and show you where else to stand, but beginning with his promises is an excellent place to start.

Whenever you read the Bible, get into the habit of looking out for God’s promises, maybe even making a note of them, and then you will be able to use them in your prayers.

A healing touch from Jesus can be life changing – which is wonderful! – but if you, or the people you are praying for, are inclined to make any significant change to your lifestyle, please think it through carefully and check it out with a wise friend, doctor or church leader first.
